Why does picking packets matter?
Almost everything we buy comes in packaging. Packaging helps to keep food fresh, makes things
easier to carry and transport and can stop them from being broken or damaged. Packaging also carries
vital information about the ingredients of a product so we know what we are eating and drinking is
safe for us.
Packaging comes in all different shapes, sizes and materials. It can be made from paper, cardboard,
plastic, glass and metals.
When making and using packaging it is important to remember the ‘three R’s – reduce, reuse
and recycle’.
Packaging can be designed in a way that makes it lighter and smaller, reducing its size and weight.
This means there is less waste to dispose of, while also making it easier to transport, using less
fuel and reducing our carbon footprint and emissions.
We can also reuse packaging, for example boxes can be used to store books and important documents.
Glass and plastic jars are ideal for keeping toys in or odds and ends around the house, such nails
and screws.
It is important to know what type of packaging can be recycled and that is why most packaging has a
recycling symbol on it. Being able to recycle packaging helps to preserve and protect our natural
resources. Making packaging from recycled materials also cuts down on the amount of energy and water
that is needed, which is good for our environment.
How to Play
Shopping can be fun, but do you ever think about the effect your purchase can have on the environment? Go on a shopping spree, but be sure that only the eco friendly products find their way into your basket.
Chris Judd's Tip:
Remember buying in bulk is a good thing! Anything with a recycled symbol is much
better for the environment than one without too!
Pick Your Items
Use your mouse to pick which items you're going to purchase, but be careful that
you choose the most environmentally friendly options. If something shows up that
you don’t think is an environmentally friendly option, drag it to the returns
basket. If you think the item is good, scan it and drop it in your box.
Pick Your Items
A lot of products are now made from recycled materials. Using these recycled
products helps preserve resources such as trees.
Some items are unnecessarily packaged. Where possible, avoid using packaging,
especially plastic bags.
Buy Australian made. You'll not only be supporting local business, but you'll
also save energy.
Instead of buying lots of small, individually packed items, try and buy a larger product to save on packaging.
